Youth Advisory Board at State Capitol
The Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board spent Tuesday, March 20th at the state Capitol with other youth from Buffalo County, meeting with senators and discussing legislative issues important to the youth.
Youth met with Senators Hadley, Avery, Wightman and more, as they shared information on bills relating to the tax-exempt status of sugary drinks, synthetic drugs and tobacco-free school campuses.
In addition to meeting with senators, the youth also had a question and answer time with Governor Dave Heineman and sat in the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature as bills were read on the floor.
Thank you to Region 3 Behavioral Health Services for the mini-grant that enabled the Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board to hold this Youth Day at the Capitol and engage youth in advocacy at the state level.
The Youth Advisory Board is now recruiting for the 2012-2013 school year, and there are seats open in all 9 schools represented in Buffalo County. Know an interested youth? Have them contact their school counselor for more information or download the application at www.bcyab.org/about/apply-for-yab. Contact 308-865-2284 or email info@bcchp.org for more information.
Youth Advisory Board Recruitment
The Buffalo County Advisory Board is beginning its recruitment for the 2012-2013 school year! What is the Youth Advisory Board (YAB)? It is a youth-based, youth-led, youth-driven board that provides grant funds to youth organizations for the betterment of Buffalo County communities. Students from all the Buffalo County schools, grades 7-12, make up the board and meet once a month to tackle a range of social problems that concern them, from our economy and environment to safety, tobacco, alcohol and other illegal drugs.
In past years, YAB has hosted an annual Youth Summit and has put a media campaign into communities encouraging students to Take a Stand against making negative decisions, such as participating in underage drinking. The board makes an annual trip to the State Capitol to meet with state senators and discuss issues in legislation that they are concerned about.
Have a student that is interested in making a difference in their community? YAB is a great opportunity to be involved, make connections and learn about making lasting change in their communities. Applications are available now at the Community Partners web site and the YAB web site. Applicants must get the signature of their school counselor, so keep that in mind as they apply. The application deadline is June 1, 2012 and should be returned to Buffalo County Community Partners: P.O. Box 1466, Kearney, NE 68848-1466. Call 308-865-2284 with questions!
Youth Advisory Board Prepares for State Capitol Trip
The students of the Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board are preparing for their annual State Capitol Trip coming up on March 20th. This trip is an excellent opportunity for our Buffalo County youth to learn about the state legislative process and gives the students an opportunity to dialog with state senators about issues they care about for their communities. This year the students are hoping to discuss bills relating to: the tax on sugary drinks, tobacco and alcohol free campuses and synthetic drug use. Due to snow, the trip had to be canceled last year so the students are looking forward to this opportunity to meet with their senators and discuss these issues.
